LOCATION - Gilford is in Belknap County. Here is how you get to Gilford. Take Route 11A from West Alton into Gilford.

 

GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES - In Gilford, you will find the Gunstock Mountain Ski Area. Lockes Hill has trails on it and it had a castle on it. There is a popular scuba diving place on Lake Winnipesaukee called Lady of the Lake. The Broads is a beautiful scenic area that Benjamin Kimball made a special railroad to from Laconia for his own personal use. There is also the Kimball Wildlife Forest.

 

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS - Gilford has cool skiing at the Gunstock Ski Area. If you are interested in hiking on trails, here are two places you can go. One place is the Kimball Wildlife Park where you can see animals and other interesting things. The second place you can go is Weeks Woods. It is a trail area. Pheasant Ridge Country Club is a place you can go for golfing.

 

POPULATION - In 1990, there were about 5,555 people in Gilford. In 1996, there were about 5,947.

 

BUSINESSES - Gilford has department stores like K-Mart. Gilford has three radio stations named WLNH, WLKZ, and WEMJ. It has the Gunstock Ski Area and Eptam which is a business that makes plastics. The Vernitron Company makes electric devices in Gilford.

 

HISTORY - Gilford was first settled in the late 1770's. It was originally part of Gilmanton. Samuel Jewett, the original settler, built his home in 1777. His property later became part of Laconia. In 1792, a meeting house was built on Gunstock Hill. A store and other homes were built around it. Gilford was made an independent town in 1812. A Revolutionary War veteran named the town Guilford, but a clerk in the statehouse misspelled the name to make it Gilford.
