Manchester is the largest city in New Hampshire. Amoskeag is a popular word. This word, from the Algonquin language, means place of many fish.

LOCATION -These are roads you need to take to get to Manchester. Take Route 93 and 293. Manchester is in Hillsborough County.

GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES - These are the geographical features I found. Manchester has Mill Pond, Long Pond, Nutts Pond, Stevens Pond, Crystal Lake, the Merrimack River, the Great Cohas Swamp, Black Brook Park, Pine Island Pond, Stevens Park, and Derryfield Park.

 

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS - Some tourist attractions in Manchester are the CFX Field, a new soccer field, Colonial Inn Dancing, and movies. The River Fest is one of the largest events in Manchester. The General John Stark House is in Manchester. The Amoskeag Millyard has the buildings left from the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company, which was running between 1838 and 1935. At that time, it was one of the largest cloth making companies in the world.

 

POPULATION - The population of Manchester is 100,000 people.

 

BUSINESSES - Poly-Vac, Inc. is a business in Manchester that makes surgical trays. Another is the Oxford Health Plan. Some colleges that are in Manchester are St. Anselm College, Hesser College, New Hampshire College, and Notre Dame College. The Business NH Magazine is made in Manchester. The Manchester Union Leader is a newspaper made in Manchester.

 

HISTORY - John Goffe started a settlement along the Cohas Brook in 1722. He also built a water powered mill. When the settlement became a town in 1751, it was called Derryfield. Derryfield was renamed Manchester in 1810 to honor Samuel Blodget. Samuel Blodget was famous for opening trade routes with Boston and Concord.

General John Stark, a citizen of Manchester, was famous for being a hero of the Revolutionary War.
