LOCATION - If you are coming from the south ,you take Route 95 North to the Spaulding Turnpike. Then take Route 11 North. If you come from the North , you take Route 93 South and exit to Route 3 South. Then take Route 11 East to Alton. Alton is in Belknap County.

GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES - Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in New Hampshire. It is a place were you can go swimming, fishing, and boating. The Merrymeeting River is used for its boat fishing and kayaking. Alton has thirteen mountains and Mt. Major is the best known. Alton's annual average temperature is 45.5 degrees F.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS - The Mt. Major Hiking Trail is about a 2 mile hike to the top. Lake Winnipesaukee is a place where you can go water skiing and swimming. There is also a Miniature golf course and ice cream stands. Alton's nearest ski area is Gunstock. Another attraction is the Mt. Washington boat. It takes you to places around Lake Winnipesaukee.

POPULATION - The population of Alton has almost doubled since 1970 when it was 1,647. In 1997, the population of Alton was 3,412.

BUSINESSES - McDonald's and Dunkin Donuts are fast food restaurants in Alton. The Water Industries provides commercial pump systems. Alton Service Center is the place you would want to go if you want your car repaired. The R.F. Plant Company is a custom machine shop. Alton Printing Co. is a commercial printing company.

HISTORY-In 1770 settlers came from New Durham to Alton. Settlers didn't know much about education, but they knew about the forest around "the great arm of the pond," which was what Alton Bay was called. In 1773, Benjamin Bennett built the first frame house for a shelter in Alton. In 1777, the first town meeting was held outside in mid-winter. In 1782, there were 30 families in Alton. In 1797, $133.33 was needed to hire an elder to teach the church. The first meeting house was started in 1798. The church and meeting house house were Orthodox. In 1912, Alton School burned down, so the townspeople made the Alton Fire Department in 1936. A new school was built in Alton.
