LOCATION - Take Route 93 South to Route 3. This takes you right into Merrimack. Merrimack is in Hillsborough County.

GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES - The average temperature for January is 21.8 degrees F. The average temperature for July is 69.5 degrees F. The annual average temperature is 46.3 degrees F. Merrimack's annual rainfall is 30.8 inches.

There are several rivers, lakes, and streams in Merrimack. The Baboosic Brook is on the town line. The Souhegan River is an important river to Merrimack because the Souhegan Dam that was built on it provided hydropower for the mills along the river. The Merrimack River is a fun place to canoe.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS - The Thornton Cemetery is a tourist attraction because Matthew Thornton is buried there. He was a doctor and he signed the Declaration of Independence. The oldest gravestone in Merrimack can be found in the Thornton Cemetery. The Thornton Monument is located in the town of Merrimack.

POPULATION - In 1970, the population for Merrimack was 8,595. By 1997, the population had grown to 23,611.

BUSINESSES - The Merrimack Fish Rearing Station produces many fish to stock the local brooks and ponds. The Kollsman Instrument Company works with electra optics. The Fidelity Company provides financial services. Filtronic Comtek makes microwave components.

HISTORY - Merrimack is 253 years old. In 1746, when Merrimack became a town, it had less than 50 families. The Pawtucket, Nashuaway, and Penacook Indians camped along the Souhegan and Merrimack Rivers. The Penacook tribe was the largest tribe, but Passaconaway ruled all the tribes in the Merrimack Valley.

In the 1800's, eight one- or two-room schools were built. There was no transportation to school for children. When children were not in school, they worked on farms. Near the end of the 19th century, a teacher's college opened that later became a high school. This building was torn down when the present day high school was built.

Brick yards were once the main industry in Merrimack. Bricks were floated on barges down the Merrimack River to be sold in Lowell, MA. Cooperage shops were built to make barrels for storing flour and gunpowder. Tannery shops treated leather.
