History

LOCATION - New Castle use to be called Great Island. It connects to the mainland by bridges and a causeway. New Castle is surrounded by the Piscataqua River. To get to New Castle, you would take Route 1 from the South. Then you would take Route 1B toward the East. Or you could take Route 1A and then go on Route 1B. Or you could take Route 1 from the North and then go onto Route 1B toward the East. You need to cross the causeway to get to New Castle. New Castle is in the county of Rockingham.

GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES - New Castle has a cove called Upper Cove. New Castle is bordered by the Piscataqua River. It has a pond called Mill Pond. New Castle also has a fort on Clark's Point. There is a point called Salamander Point. It has a cove called Lower Cove. New Castle is an island.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS - Some tourist attractions are the tennis court and the historical homes. Portsmouth Harbor Light U.S. Coast Guard Station used to be Fort William and Mary.

BUSINESSES - Some people in New Castle go to Portsmouth or Rochester for jobs. The two biggest businesses in New Castle are Pier People, a marina, and NC. Wentworth LLC Sales. Some other businesses are the elementary school and tennis court.

HISTORY - New Castle separated from Portsmouth in 1693 and became its own town. Most of the people of early New Castle depended on the sea for fishing and shipping.

Since New Castle is at the beginning of Portsmouth Harbor, several forts were built on the island. One fort, called "The Castle," was renamed Fort William and Mary before the Revolutionary War. The Patriots raided the fort in late 1774 to take the gun powder that was stored there. During the middle of the war, the fort was renamed Fort Hancock. The fort was later called Fort Constitution. It was used during the War of 1812. A light tower on New Castle was also used during the War of 1812.
