The Native Americans sometimes attacked, so the white settlers wanted to build a fort to protect themselves. The New Durham Meeting House was built on the hill so they knew when the Native Americans were going to attack them. In 1770, Alton Bay was part of New Durham, but it's not any more.

In 1847 the Cocheco River Railroad was started. It went from Dover, through Rochester, Farmington, and New Durham to Alton Bay. The tracks ran close to what we now call Route 11. Many country taverns closed after the railways came because travelers went on train instead of the stage coach so they didn't stay over in town.
