The Flume is an amazing site of natural wonder discovered in the early 1800's by Mrs. Guernsey, who was almost 100 years old at the time. She was coming back from fishing and was following a stream home, when she happened upon the gorge. The giant boulder, that you see in the picture to the right, which had been left behind by the glacier, was loosened from the steep sides of the gorge on June 20, 1883, after a four day rainstorm. The gorge walls are made of Conway granite, and rise 90 feet. This deep ravine is caused by water, Flume Brook, eroding the rock.
