PUNISHMENT

written by Chris, Shane, Shawn, and Travis

Most New Hampshire towns were peaceful, but all towns had laws to promote and protect the citizens. Many of the laws were set up by the church such as everyone must go to church and observe the Sunday laws. Other laws forbid stealing and gossiping. If laws were broken, people were publicly punished for all to see. Sometimes people had to sit in stocks or put in the dunking stool and dunked in and out of a pool of water. Sometimes people were whipped. Everyone knew when someone broke a rule.
