2. DISCIPLINE: If a child didn't bring his share of wood for heat he was given the seat in the back near the outside door, which was a cold spot indeed on a winter's day. The teacher whipped the children.
3. SCHOOL SUPPLES: The early schools had only two books for students: the Bible and primer. Some students used a hornbook. A hornbook was a wooden paddle with a piece of paper on it that showed letters, numbers, and bible verses that they used for paper and charcoal for pencils.
4. How they got to school? Some children had to walk to school. Other children rode horses to school.
5.What teachers did: Teachers taught little children how to read, spell, and do math. The teacher had a variety of jobs besides teaching students. She had to start the fire every morning and scrub the school room. Teachers had to wear at least two petticoats and they had to make sure their dresses were no more then two inches above their ankles and their clothes were dark colors.
6. What was different ? The teachers had to light the fire early in the morning, had longer school days, had a little building, had no maps or black boards. Pencils were very rare.
7. Extra information: The school had only one room. The only heat came from the fireplace.
