SUMMER READING: KEEP THEM READING ALL SUMMER - We are fortunate to have so many excellent reading opportunities here in New Durham. Our public library is sponsoring a wonderful Australian themed summer reading program. Our local bookstore, Fox Tale Books, is stocked with a great selection of reading for all levels. And this year, students who are in good standing may borrow books from our school media center and keep them through the summer. They will find a selection of chapter books, information books, and activity books – plenty of titles to read in the shade on a hot day, keep for a rainy day, or read in a tent by flashlight! Students may borrow books during the last week of school, June 16-23. The media center will be open on three Wednesday mornings: July 16, 23, and August 6. Books may be returned on those days or kept through the summer and returned when school begins in late August. So READ, READ, And READ! and enjoy your summer!

NEW DURHAM FARMER’S MARKET - Here's hoping the weatherman is correct this week and that we'll dodge the forecasted rains on Friday. Things are starting to grow in our gardens and it's always nice to see a wider variety at market.  Nora is bringing salsa & tortilla chips (they sell out every week so come early); breads in blueberry wheat, sticky buns, rosemary & olive oil, some others, and focaccia; strawberry and spinach salads, springrolls and doughnuts if she has time.  Claire will have banana breads, muffins, whoopie pies and if they are ripe, will be picking and bringing fresh strawberries.  Dotty's perennials look wonderful; all very large, healthy and ready to into the ground. Very frequently her plants are big enough to get two or even four divisions so you can get more bang for your buck.  Sandy has promised to bring some daylilies on Friday. She's another of our most prolific gardeners and has about a hundred different varieties and brings her photo album with her so you can choose from all of them. Special orders are cheerfully accepted.  Here in our gardens the lettuce is plentiful and still tender from all the rain. For cut flowers the peonies are almost done for the season, but Ill bring the few that remain (deep burgundy and pink), bright yellow yarrow, columbine, foxgloves and lunaria (money plant). Tomatoes have been planted up to larger pots and while there aren't many left, there is still a wide variety:  Big Boy, Better Boy, Early Girl, Jet Star, Supersweet 100 and Sugar Snack. Ten or so castor bean plants are still available, but will probably be gone after this week along with the hop vines. Canna lilies are also doing well this season and both varieties available have very decorative foliage and by next week the colocasia (elephant ear) should be ready for containers.  Mary McHale will be with us in spirit only this week but you can catch her at the store. She always has wonderful things and don't forget about the Saturday Kid's Craft Project using collage to create camouflage happening on June 28th from 2 to 4.  Hope to see you all on Friday - have a wonderful weekend.  Kate
