The College Search

The search for college usually begins in student's junior year, however, students may begin this process truly at anytime. Technology and the internet have made this process extremely user friendly, in that college and university information is easily accessible to everyone, students can even visit a college without even leaving their home, to start with anyway. The KRHS Guidance Department will work with students every step of the way supporting the student in finding a college/program that fits their needs and goals, as well as assist students through the application and financial aid process. The more contact a student makes with their counselor the more the counselor can do to support the student.

We encourage both students and their parents/guardians to make use of the College Board a web site, as it is full of information, including great timelines for what student's should be doing in their Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior Years if they are planning to attend college after high school. Students can set up a free account to track their college search process, register for the SAT, utilize a college search engine, and there is a wealth of information about every possible topic related to the college search, application and financial aid process. The KRHS Guidance staff will customize a search process for each student through the use of College Board, and through a wide range of resources available in our office. Generally, counselors begin meeting with their students in January of their junior year to start thinking about life after high school. The KRHS Guidance staff has a 90 minute presentation "Understanding the College Search and Application Process" that is presented in all 11th grade English courses, providing students a broad overview. From this point, students are encouraged to make appointments to see their counselor to discuss their unique goals, design a custom search process and time line to fit their needs. (Counselors will make contact with juniors who do not make appointments as well) We welcome parents/guardians to come in with their students and meet with their counselor to discuss options.

The college search and application process can be stressful, however, it is the goal of the KRHS Guidance team to minimize this stress for both students and their parents/guardians. Our team has years of experience in supporting student's through this process, and can be a tremendous resource to students who utilize our services. There is a college/program for every student who desires to further their education and we will support our students in reaching their goals.

Helpful Web Sites for both students and parents/guardians.
