Course registration process for already enrolled students

Course registration usually begins in February each year. Students receive a copy of the Program of Studies and a Course Registration Form via their KC Advisor. Students will have 2-3 weeks to review information, make course selections for the following year. Each class has a unique registration form. These forms can be download via this web site if misplaced. It is important that students follow the directions. All students should sign up for a total of 8 credits each year, though after a schedule is created a student may modify their credits. We also ask that students provide a list of alternative courses, up to 4 credits, as sometimes an elective course that has been advertised does not run do to lack of interest, OR we are not able to fit a request into a student's schedule because it conflicts with another course. The alternative list should not contain courses included in the 8 credits. Students are encouraged to meet with their respective counselor to develop a four year plan and review credits to make the best course selection for the following year.

Schedule of Required Courses for each grade level (noted in bold)

12 Grade English 12, World Affairs. 1 Math Credit and 1 Science Credit Advised. Plus electives.

Notes: Athlete's may elect to exempt out of Physical Education to take an additional elective credit. Students considering a 2 or 4 year college must successfully complete no less than Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II during high school, however, additional math is highly recommended beyond these three courses. Students considering a 4 year college are also recommended to complete 2 to 3 years of a World Language.

Key Points:

* To be on track for on time graduation, students should take a minimum of 7 credits per year.

* Students may not request a study hall at the time of registration, as often students will end up with a study hall even if they requested 8 credits due to constraints of our building. If a student needs a study hall, this can be addressed after a schedule is created. (Students receive no credit for study halls)

*Doubling up on core courses is not always possible, therefore please be sure alternative courses are noted.

*We ask that parents/guardians review a student's registration and sign the form. However, if a student does not turn in the form on time this may not occur. In this instance the student's counselor will review the student's academic history and credits to date and create a basic schedule. After a schedule is created, the parent and student may make an appointment to make adjustments. However, a student may be disappointed to find that they are not able to get into the electives they desire, as they have been filled by other students. So, it is recommended every student submit their course registration requests on time for the best possible schedule.

*Once all student registrations are entered, the guidance department will develop a Master schedule for the following year. This process takes about 2 months. Our goal is to have schedules to students by the end of May, which will allow students time during the remainder of the school year to make changes to their schedule. Students schedule an appointment with their counselor to make changes. Students who do not make changes prior to summer vacation, will need to come in during summer guidance office hours, which will be posted on line. Students will have to make changes by Friday, August 7th. After this date, the student's schedule for first semester will be official, and no changes will be made. Summer office hours are busy, and in most cases guidance staff will not have the time make schedule changes over the phone, priority goes to students with appointments. Please plan ahead to avoid disappointment. We strongly advise students take care of making necessary changes prior to leaving for summer vacation.

Note: The August 7th deadline is firm for the following reasons:

*The guidance department will close until the end of August.

*Upon re-opening the guidance department will turn its focus to enrolling transfer students, staff in service programs, and start up programming.

*Departments/Teachers need the time to order necessary materials for the number of student's enrolled in courses.

It is the goal of the Guidance Department staff to assist every student in having the best possible schedule, however to do so, we need students and parents to be sure to follow the guidelines and time frames outlined.
