HISTORY

The first Olympic games were held in Athens Greece in 776 B.C. There was only one event called the “stade.” The stade was a sprint and only men were allowed to compete. Women were not allowed to compete or watch the Olympics because the games were dedicated to Zeus and therefore meant for men.

The Olympic flag is made up of five different colored rings interlocked ( blue, yellow, black, green and red) on a white background. The different colored rings represent the five parts of the world that were joined together in the Olympic movement. They are; Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia and, Europe.

The tradition of the Olympic flame began during the ancient Olympic Games in Athens Greece. The flame was lit for each Olympics, every four years. The flame burned throughout all of the games. The flame represents the death and rebirth of Greek heroes. In the ancient Olympics there was no torch relay. The first torch relay ever was in 1936 during the Olympic games in Berlin, Germany.
