CODE OF CONDUCT
KRMS feels that it is very important to protect each student's right to an education. Behaviors that disrupt the learning environment or create unsafe conditions will be dealt with according to this Code of Conduct. The emphasis of behavioral expectations is on respect of: oneself, others, and the school community. These three basic behaviors will create a school climate that is productive for learning and one in which all students feel safe and confident.
Most behavior within the following Code of Conduct will be handled by one of the following levels of discipline in an attempt to modify student behavior.
Level 1
Misbehavior that interferes with the orderly operation of the school.
These behaviors will be documented and handled by the teacher/team. Disciplinary action may include verbal warnings, parent contact, teacher/team detention, and/or referral to the administration. Consequences will be progressive.
The following are a Level 1 offense:
¨ failure to follow attendance and arrival at school procedures
¨ failure to follow the locks & lockers procedures
¨ failure to follow the preparedness procedures
¨ failure to follow the cafetorium procedures
¨ failure to follow the dress code
¨ failure to follow the after-school procedures
¨ swearing
¨ tardy to class
¨ causing a disruption of the educational process
¨ acting in a disruptive, rude, or disrespectful fashion
¨ running, jumping, pushing, shoving, or yelling
¨ misuse of your locker
¨ play-fighting or play-scuffle with another student
¨ skipping a detention
Level 2
Serious misbehavior or frequently repeated from Level 1 constitute a Level 2 offense.
These behaviors will be documented by the teacher and the student and then be referred to the team leader/administration. Actions may include: restitution, search and confiscation, a written student action plan for avoidance of the problem in the future (signed by a team leader, administrator, parent and student), administrative detention, In-school suspension and/or Out of school suspension (when appropriate). Parents are notified. In-school and/or Out of school suspensions will be progressive.
The following behaviors are considered Level 2 offenses:
¨ forging any note, pass, or any other official paperwork for yourself or another
student
¨ cheating on a quiz, test, or other exercise (cheating includes copying homework)
¨ lying about being involved in an incident
¨ cutting a class for any reason
¨ instigating or participating in threatening or harmful behaviors
¨ disobeying substitute teachers
¨ failure to follow the procedures regarding the handling of medications
¨ possessing any immodest materials (pictures, magazines) in school
¨ possessing matches, lighters, etc. in school or on school property
¨ blatant defiance of authority
Level 3
These are illegal or dangerous behaviors; such acts may include violence to another person, abuse of another's property, or acts posing a direct threat to the safety of self or others at school. Chronic offenders of Level 2 are also included within Level 3. Alternative measures for intervention will be sought.
These behaviors arson, assault, etc. will bring Out of school suspension and alternative actions (i.e., conflict resolution training), or expulsion as approved by the school board. Parents and police will be notified. Parental meetings may be required prior to readmission. Out of school suspensions will be progressive.
The following behaviors are considered Level 3 offenses:
¨ engaging in any unlawful act (for example, robbery, theft, violence,
¨ deliberately setting off the fire alarm
¨ calling in a bomb threat
¨ committing an act of violence against yourself or another person
¨ possessing or using tobacco products or any other smoking materials at school
¨ possessing or selling any illegal or controlled substance
¨ intimidating, harassing, bullying, or threatening another person (including ethnic,
racial, or gender slurs)
¨ bringing illegal substances and/or paraphernalia to school (items will be
confiscated, police and parents will be called)
¨ using illegal substances (your parents and the police will be called)
¨ deliberately damaging or defacing any school property (you will pay for damages)
¨ bringing any item to school which is considered dangerous [including: weapons,
knives, sharp objects, firecrackers, stink bombs, etc. (see Safe School
Act)]
¨ bringing a firearm to school will result in expulsion for twelve (12) months (the
firearm will be confiscated)
¨ making sexually explicit or embarrassing communications to others (Title IX
offenses are documented, involve parent meeting and may be filed with
Title IX coordinator at the SAU office)
¨ touching others in ways which would be either personally offensive or socially
inappropriate (Title IX - See #15)
¨ profanity directed at an adult
