| Sherman Poppen surfer had a wild
idea
to surf the wintery scape of the rocky mountains. Sherman made his
prototype out of 2 children skiis bolted together. It was a present
for his daughter Wendy. The next year, 1965 the snurfer ( Snow-surfer )
was finding its way around toy stores in 1965 for the price of only
$15. One-million snurfers were sold in under 10 years of it being in
the market. Over the years the so called “snurfer” was quickly
going down hill, Literally. It went downhill because of it's limited
control, and an unstable board isn't the thing people wanted to think
about when riding down the rocky mountains. But then the savior of all snowboards came, Jake Burton Carpenter. He made the company that now manufactures all the Burton boards today. Jake Burton was completely into the idea of sliding down a hill or mountain on snow. When the snurfer started to die, Burton was on the case. He added bindings and edges for carving and stability. In 1977 Bob Webber made the famous “YELLOW BANANA” board made out of polyurethane.Chuck Barfoot invented fiberglass in snowboard production making the snowboard a lot more flexible and easier to pop. From then on the snurfer now known as the snowboard has been a popular sport in the winter. |
